In “Grand Touring” automated driving mode² the steering wheel and pedals disappear and all occupants enjoy the kind of legroom and freedom of movement familiar from first-class air travel.

The doors are rear-hinged. This makes it possible to shift the body and frame components in the front end of the vehicle by 25 centimeters. In active “Sports” mode the Audi skysphere concept¹ is an agile sports car measuring 4.94 meters in length.

The rear, which has been optimised in a wind tunnel, combines the classic streamlined elements of a roadster with large glass sections.

Like at the front, the rear design also features a digitally controlled LED panel across the entire width of the vehicle. Among other things, the light effects indicate the mode in which the concept vehicle is driving.

The operating elements in the monitor panel on the centre console are only needed in “Sports” mode. They are elegantly retracted into the layout in “Grand Touring” mode.

In “Sports” mode the steering wheel and pedals take up a customised position within the cockpit. The operating elements in the dash panel and the monitor on the center console also reappear.

Large touch-screen monitors on the cowl of cockpit and in the upper section of the center console are used to operate the vehicle systems and infotainment.

The Audi skysphere concept is a fascinating symbiosis of design and experience, and it was shaped by virtual as well as physical interaction between the designers and developers in Ingolstadt and the Audi Design Loft in Malibu, California. From idea to concept car: how the Audi skysphere concept¹ came about
The development process of the Audi skysphere concept¹ combined digital design with traditional craftsmanship. The documentation shows how 3D technology was used to drive forward the design process, which spanned thousands of miles between the Audi Design Loft in Malibu and the team in Ingolstadt, Germany and gives insights into the innovative interior design and engineering of a concept car that is simultaneously sports car and sedan.
